Custom design capabilities enhance & evolve a demanding control centre
Responsible for delivering a safe, reliable and sustainable transport network, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) continues to meet the demands of a growing population.
The Space
The heart of the network
At the heart of the operation is the control engine or Transport Operating Room, monitoring all modes of traffic across roads, light rail, rail, and ferries. “The original fit out was nearly 30 years old and well overdue for an upgrade” declares the Property Project Manager at TfNSW. “Critical equipment had reached end of life”.
The transport management centre needed to ensure the implementation of a larger video wall could replace the existing obsolete system and support the expanding remit of the Transport Operations Room in a fast‑paced operational environment.
The Design
Putting operators first
When designing the floorplan, a key consideration was to optimise visibility across the space. Prue De Wynter Ozenc, Associate Director, Davenport Campbell explained, “The objective was to create an unobstructed view of the operations screens at the front of the Transport Management Centre (TMC), while ensuring adequate access to the lockers located at the front of the TMC”.
Prue continues “Schiavello worked closely with Davenport Campbell, TfNSW, and the design team to create a bespoke sit-to-stand console that supports ergonomic working for employees who typically undertake long shifts. The workstation needed to accommodate extensive technology on the desktop, as well as provide storage for racks and equipment beneath the desks. The scale of the consoles made construction and coordination complex, but the design team embraced the challenge.”
Staff involvement in the design process was critical for a successful outcome. To ensure key considerations were captured “we implemented a series of interviews and workshops, along with console prototypes to test and provide feedback” explains the Property Project Manager at TfNSW. Schiavello’s local manufacturing capabilities ensured adjustments could be made in response to ongoing feedback. As a result 30+ control desks incorporating high load lifting columns, metal framing, custom work tops and joinery were delivered.

The Property Project Manager at TfNSW also shares “feedback on the fitout has been very positive and staff were very eager to return and occupy the brand new space”.
